Desire. Greed. Passion. Just another night on the plantation.
The City Theatre Company continues to sizzle this summer with the upcoming production of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, opening July 22, 2010. The sultry, steamy American classic is directed by Jeff Hinkle and runs four weekends through August 15.
One of the most successful plays of our time and all too rarely performed in Austin, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is the classic story of a Southern family in crisis, focusing on the turbulent relationship of Maggie “The Cat” and favorite son and former pro-football star Brick. As they gather one evening for the birthday celebration of Brick’s father, patriarch and tycoon, Big Daddy Pollitt at his Mississippi Delta mansion, all are aware that it may be his last. Throughout the evening, alliances made and broken, ghosts of the past emerge with greed and jealousy, lies are spread and revealed, and the ties that hold a family together are stretched to the breaking point with impending doom. Through ever – present savage humor and explosive wit, Williams masterfully brings to life one of the theatre’s most intriguingly dysfunctional families.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof first premiered on Broadway in 1955 and became an instant hit. It was directed by Elia Kazan and starred Barbara Bel Geddes, Ben Gazzara and Burl Ives. In 1958, MGM released the Academy award - nominated film version starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. Subsequent Broadway revivals have been produced starring such acclaimed actors as Kathleen Turner and Charles Durning with the latest 2008 New York run featuring an African – American cast starring James Earl Jones.
“We don’t have many chances like this. It is an exciting opportunity to experience the power and magnitude of Tennessee Williams’ work here in Austin,” says Jeff Hinkle, director of the production. “This play is perhaps the name most singularly associated with great American Theatre, and arguably, the best that he has ever written.” Jeff Hinkle has also directed the City Theatre productions of The Taming of the Shrew and Hamlet. The actors taking the stage for the production include Tim Brown (Brick), Rachel McGinnis (Maggie), Garry Peters (Big Daddy), Terri Bennett (Big Mama), Jonathan Urso (Gooper), Samantha Brewer (Mae), Steve Lawson (Dr. Baugh) and Stephen Wayne Wilder (Rev. Tooker).
The City Theatre Company is a non-profit organization and is sponsored in part by the Greater Austin Creative Alliance, the Austin Cultural Arts Division and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
